This is what Lithuania has been pushing for since 2024.
The Prosecutor's Office of the International Criminal Court announced the beginning of a formal investigation against the authorities of Belarus over a campaign of force against the country's civilian population that began after the 2020 elections.
The Belarusian authorities are suspected of committing crimes against humanity - namely, politically motivated deportations carried out as part of state policy.
The investigation against Belarus in 2024 was requested by Lithuania. Belarus is not a member of the ICC, so the court has been trying for a year and a half to determine whether the alleged crimes fall under its jurisdiction.
The ICC has now concluded that the alleged crimes were of a cross-border nature, that is, they were partially committed on the territory of Lithuania - so they fall under the jurisdiction of the court.
After the presidential election in 2020, hundreds of thousands of people will leave Belarus. Many people left not only because of disagreement with the political course, but also forced - due to the obvious pressure of law enforcers or under the threat of criminal prosecution.
