The Ayatollah's residence, without waiting for night, was attacked by 200 fighter jets and 30 bombs.

The U.S. and Israeli attack on Iran had been planned for months, and 200 fighter jets were deployed during the Feb. 28 strikes, The Wall Street Journal reported, citing U.S. and Israeli intelligence sources.

The operation was planned to strike during a meeting between Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei and other officials. Israeli officials said they were able to locate three such meetings at once, but only one was attended by the ayatollah.

The moment was "so unique" that the military attacked during the day without waiting for night, the interlocutors said. 200 U.S. and Israeli fighter jets were deployed to hit nearly 500 targets across Iran. It became the largest single air operation in Israeli history, the publication specified.

Thirty bombs were dropped on Khamenei's residence, leaving it "scorched and destroyed." In addition to him, Israel said the ayatollah's chief security adviser Ali Shamkhan, Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps commander Mohammed Pakpour and Defense Minister Amir Nasirzadeh were also killed.

The former head of Israeli military intelligence Amos Yadlin said everyone was expecting a night attack, as happened in the summer of 2025, but the strike in the middle of the day was a "tactical surprise."

According to the interlocutors, the U.S. decided on the operation after negotiators reported a "complete failure" of diplomatic talks - Iran was not going to give up uranium enrichment and its missile program. Moreover, US intelligence received data that Tehran was also preparing attacks on US facilities, so President Donald Trump decided to be proactive.
