US President Donald Trump has slapped punitive duties of 25% on all Indian goods that were imposed because of Russian oil purchases.
Reuters reports Reuters.
The White House says Trump announced a trade agreement with India on Monday that reduced US tariffs on Indian goods to 18%. In exchange, New Delhi agreed to stop buying Russian oil and lower trade barriers.
Reuters recalls that India relies heavily on oil imports to cover about 90% of its needs, and imports of cheap Russian oil have helped reduce its import bill since Moscow's invasion of Ukraine in 2022, when Western countries imposed sanctions on energy exports.
India recently began slowing its purchases from Russia. They were about 1.2 million bpd in January and are projected to drop to about 1 million bpd in February and 800,000 bpd in March, according to a Reuters report.
