Trump Has Advocated For A New Agreement To Replace The START Treaty

The Strategic Offensive Reductions Treaty expired today.

US President Donald Trump told Truth Social that instead of extending the START Treaty, he believes it is necessary to work on a new long-term agreement.

"We should have our experts work on a new, improved and modernized treaty that can last long into the future, rather than extending New START, a deal that was poorly negotiated by the United States and is also seriously broken," the American president said.

It was previously reported that START expired on February 5, 2026. The White House said that Trump will decide on further steps on nuclear arms control when he sees fit. The Financial Times also wrote that Trump wants to maintain parity on the number of nuclear weapons with Russia and include China in the negotiations.

In addition, Vice President J.D. Vance emphasized that the United States will work with Russia, China and other countries to reduce the number of nuclear weapons in the world.
