In Estonia, a rift has emerged between the government and the president over a possible resumption of contacts with Russia, Bloomberg reports.
So, the country's president Alar Karis had previously supported the idea of appointing a special envoy from the European Union to resume contacts with Moscow. He said Europe should have initiated the negotiation process but was "a little late", so its place at the negotiating table was taken by US President Donald Trump. Nevertheless, he said, the European side still has a say because it is indirectly involved in the war by supporting Ukraine.
Estonian Prime Minister Kristen Michal, however, speaking to reporters on February 5, disagreed with this position. He said that direct talks with Moscow were "inappropriate." The politician also expressed the opinion that "only pressure works in the case of Russia."
"There is a perception that the European Union is not involved in the negotiations. I can say that the European Union is constantly involved in negotiations - we are involved in negotiations with Ukraine," Michal said.
