Earlier, Trump said he would "very much like" to get Maria Machado involved in Venezuelan politics.
Venezuelan opposition leader Maria Corina Machado said in an interview with the US publication Politico that Venezuela could hold presidential elections as early as this year.
Machado admitted that she has not yet discussed the issue with US President Donald Trump. She said in an interview that she believes a transparent voting procedure in Venezuela could be prepared in eight to nine months.
In 2025, Ms. Machado won the Nobel Peace Prize. She has repeatedly supported American strikes on Venezuela and military intervention. But after the U.S. captured the country's dictator, Nicolas Maduro, in January, Trump denied the possibility of her involvement in Venezuelan politics. Many analysts also noted that the White House is betting more on the former Venezuelan president's entourage. That said, Trump later said he would "very much like" to involve Machado in politics in that country.
