Zelensky Says He Wants Exact Date Of Ukraine's Admission To EU
Vladimir Zelensky

Von der Leyen replied.

Ukrainian President Vladimir Zelensky in an interview published on February 23 with Financial Times called on the European Union to outline a realistic timeline for Ukraine's accession.

He believes it should happen as early as 2027.

"I need a date. I ask for it," the head of state said.

He said the EU needs to avoid a situation when new challenges, including from aggressor country Russia, will stand in Kiev's way to membership.

"Let's not allow future leaders or the next generation to face a situation when Russia blocks Ukraine's membership in the EU for 50 years," Zelensky said.

European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen said on Feb. 24 that the EU could not yet give Ukraine a specific date for accession, although the Ukrainian side was "outstandingly" implementing the necessary reforms. Her press conference in Kiev is quoted by Ukrinform.

"I understand very well that for you a clear date is absolutely important. Today you said that there is a certain indicator that you would like to achieve. From our side, a date is not possible yet. But the support with which you can achieve your target will be provided from our side," she said.
