Zimbabwe Has Turned Down $350 Million From The U.S.

Because of sovereignty concerns.

Zimbabwean President Emmerson Mnangagwa has ordered the end of negotiations with the U.S. on a $350 million health funding agreement, ZimLive reported.

Mnangagwa personally ordered a halt to negotiations on the memorandum.

The document provided for direct U.S. access to Zimbabwe's health data and access to the country's critical mineral resources, which drew protests from authorities. In addition, the government noted that signing the bilateral agreement contradicts the principles of multilateral cooperation, given the U.S. withdrawal from the World Health Organization under the administration of President Donald Trump.

Harare (Zimbabwe's capital) considers the memorandum unilateral and undermining of sovereignty.

The U.S. continues to promote similar agreements in other African countries that have already signed agreements under the America First Global Health Strategy.

The U.S. planned to finalize the bilateral agreements The process is ongoing.
