Mexican Authorities Reveal How They Tracked A Drug Lord Through His Mistress

A $15 million reward has been announced for data on El Mencho in the United States.

The Mexican Defense Ministry managed to reach the head of the largest and one of the most influential Mexican cartels "New Generation Jalisco" (CJNG) El Mencho through his mistress. This was announced by the country's National Defense Minister Ricardo Trevilla Trejo, reports El Debate.

The authorities relied on information from this woman and some individuals in the drug lord's inner circle.

According to Trevilla Trejo, intelligence work by Mexico and the U.S. made it possible to track the drug lord's movements. According to him, on February 20, a confidante of one of El Mencho's partners was located, and the next day she left the site, but the drug lord himself remained at the location with guards.

The same day, preparations began for the operation, which ended with the drug lord's elimination.

The operation to apprehend El Mencho took place on February 22. During it, the fighters of the Mexican Special Forces were attacked by members of the criminal organization. During the firefight, four gunmen were killed on the spot and three others, including Cervantes, were critically wounded. The drug lord died while being transported to Mexico City.

A $15 million reward was announced for data on El Mencho himself in the United States, and he had been on the Drug Enforcement Administration's list of the country's most wanted criminals since 2020.
