Cuban security personnel and some military advisers are leaving Venezuela amid U.S. pressure following January's operation to capture dictator Nicolas Maduro. This was reported by Reuters, citing 11 sources familiar with the situation. Caracas and Havana have not officially announced a breakdown in cooperation.
The agency said Venezuela's acting president Delcy Rodriguez has entrusted her security to Venezuelan security forces. Maduro and his predecessor Ugo Chavez previously relied on elite Cuban units. Several sources say Cuban advisers have been removed from the military counterintelligence DGCIM, a structure seen as a key tool in the crackdown on domestic opposition.
Part of the Cuban military and medics have flown home in recent weeks. One source said the decision to reduce the presence was made at Rodriguez's behest because of pressure from Washington. Other Reuters interlocutors did not specify whether it was a forced withdrawal, an independent departure or a recall decided by Havana. At the same time, several sources emphasize that some military advisers remain in the country, while some intelligence officers are likely to continue their work.
After the January 3 operation in which Maduro was captured by the US military, US President Donald Trump announced his intention to end security cooperation between Caracas and Havana.
