Media Told Who Foiled Russia's Plan To Seize Kiev

Western intelligence services passed data on the Kremlin's plans to Ukraine in advance.

The Ukrainian Defense Ministry's Main Intelligence Directorate (GID) and its head at the time, Kyryl Budanov, were already conducting preparatory measures in case of a full-scale Russian invasion before February 24, 2022. This was reported by the British publication The Guardian, describing how Western intelligence agencies passed data about the Kremlin's plans to Ukraine in advance.

In late 2021 and early 2022, the United States and Britain had detailed information about a possible Russian attack. This information came to Ukraine through official and intelligence channels.

Despite general skepticism about a full-scale Russian invasion, Ukrainian intelligence recorded an increase in military activity on the border. Russian intelligence intensified its agency and sabotage work in the country, trying to establish contacts with both high-ranking officials and the lower echelons of the state apparatus.

In such circumstances, the GUR conducted non-public contingency planning - preparations for a possible major aggression. "A small group of officers began quietly planning various escalation scenarios," The Guardian notes.

Under the guise of an exercise, Ukrainian intelligence organized logistical and security arrangements. The key object in Russia's plans was considered to be the airport in Gostomel, through which the Kremlin hoped to quickly capture Kiev. However, fierce battles for Gostomel, Moshun and Irpen destroyed this scenario.

The material emphasizes that the Ukrainian intelligence services acted in conditions of high uncertainty, but their actions helped prevent the realization of the worst scenario of the invasion.
