The president of the United States has a favorite.
US President Donald Trump is preparing his successor for the 2028 election and is increasingly discussing the issue with advisers. According to Axios, Trump is increasingly asking, as if in between, who should lead the list of Republican Party candidates for the presidency in 2028.
Trump believes that the best candidates for the post are Vice President J.D. Vance and national security adviser Marco Rubio.
According to the publication, Trump favors Vance, but visibly and increasingly praises Rubio, publicly and privately.
"Vance-Rubio is the president's perfect tandem" for 2028 - and to be clear, Vance is in charge," said a Trump adviser who was recently asked by the president to share his views on the nominees.
Vance has political advisers who, if he runs, are expected to form the backbone of a 2028 presidential campaign. Rubio has no such infrastructure - and has made it clear he's comfortable with Vance's candidacy. According to sources, Rubio told Vance personally.
Last year, Trump made it clear that Vance was "probably" his presumptive successor because "in fairness, he's the vice president." But Trump added that he prefers Rubio to "team up with J.D." on the ballot.
