The year 2026 is supposed to be the "year the war ends."

British Defense Secretary John Gilley has announced his intention to become the first defense chief to deploy the British military to Ukraine after a peace deal. He believes 2026 should be "the year this terrible war ends."

In a column for The Telegraph, Gilley described his vision for ending the Russian-Ukrainian war and emphasized the unwavering support of President Vladimir Zelensky. He noted:

"I want to be the defense minister who deploys British troops to Ukraine because it will mean that this war will finally end. It will mean we have agreed peace in Ukraine. And a secure Europe needs a strong, sovereign Ukraine."

Peacemaking "coalition of the willing"

London is working with allies to form a multinational force to secure Ukraine after the fighting stops. The UK has already invested more than $250 million to prepare its own military for a possible deployment - the funds will be used to modernize equipment, communications and drone countermeasures.

In addition, the country has joined the joint production of Ukraine's artificial intelligence-based Vosminog interceptor, which can effectively destroy Shahed at a lower cost.

Visit during massive attacks

Gilly also recalled his recent visit to Ukraine, which coincided with one of Russia's most powerful attacks. He said Russian forces fired 90 Shahed at Kiev that night, and a ballistic missile hit Lviv - just 15 minutes away from where he was staying.

"This is a stark reminder of what the Ukrainian people have endured over the last 1,459 nights," the minister said.

Support relentlessly

The British Defense Minister stressed that London will continue to step up military aid to Ukraine and increase sanctions pressure on Russia. He noted that the Ukrainian military is already integrating into NATO training programs and transferring its experience in fighting drones to allies.

In his column, Gillie emphasized:

"The Ukrainians have shown that they are not afraid of Russian aggression. The only thing Ukraine fears is Western fatigue. But as President Zelensky knows, Ukraine's friends will never tire."

The Minister summarized that the UK is committed to helping Ukraine enter negotiations from the strongest possible position and make 2026 the year the war ends.
