They Are Preparing To Toughen Punishment For One Category Of Belarusians

The deputy attorney general revealed the details.

Today, every fifth conviction in Belarus is a sentence for evasion of parents from the maintenance of children or from reimbursement of expenses for their state maintenance. The share of such criminal cases has doubled in 10 years. This was reported by Deputy Prosecutor General Alexei Stuk. According to him, the punishment for such things should be toughened, writes "Mirror".

In 2016, the specific weight of convictions under Article 174 of the Criminal Code (evasion of parents from the maintenance of children or from reimbursement of expenses spent by the state for the maintenance of children who are or were on state support) was 10%. Now it is already 20%.

"That is, it has doubled. But can you imagine what 20% is in the specific weight of the criminal record? Every fifth convicted person is under this article. For example: all kinds of theft (this is the main bulk of crimes) - 31%," - said Stuk.

He said that if such a large proportion of convictions, then "it means that the current measures neither preventive nor repressive do not work properly".

"We are thinking (I am not authorized to say about our final decision yet), but we are thinking about legislative proposals and proposals to judicial practice. Because we believe that the punishment should be tougher," Stuk added.

Now state prosecutors are focused on proposing in the courts arrest and restriction of freedom with referral to "chemistry". This is done so that working convicts can pay alimony or child support costs.

"Deprivation of liberty is not excluded. And maybe in the future it will be necessary to make more bias towards imprisonment, because it will be, well, maybe, some preventive effect on others, who will realize that except for imprisonment they will not get anything," - explained the Deputy Prosecutor General.

Article 174 of the Criminal Code provides for up to two years of imprisonment. Three-month evasion of child support payments or failure to show up for work for ten or more days within three months, concealment or understatement of wages and equated income, and other violations lead to criminal proceedings.
