The Guardian: Defeat Of Protests In Belarus Helped Putin Attack Ukraine

At the time, all these events seemed like isolated episodes.

British publication The Guardian in a large piece writes about the reasons for Russia's attack on Ukraine in 2022. One of them, according to the authors, is the defeat of protests in Belarus:

- In the summer, the brutal suppression of the protest movement in neighboring Belarus weakened Lukashenko and made him more dependent on the Kremlin than ever. This opened the door to forcing Lukashenko to allow Belarusian territory to be used as a staging ground for an invasion.

At about the same time, a team of FSB poisoners injected the nerve agent Novichok into the underwear of Alexei Navalny, an opposition politician capable of attracting mass support, putting him in a coma.

At the time, all these events seemed like isolated episodes. Later, they began to look like Putin's preparation for a big game with Ukraine, which he believed would cement his role in history as a great Russian leader.
