Coordinator of the civil campaign "European Belarus", ex-political prisoner Maksim Viniarski commented on the release of Belarusian opposition leader Nikolai Statkevich:

- It is very good when a person is released. On such a day it is always joyful and pleasant. It's as if a part of yourself feels free again. Any such day immediately acquires a tinge of solemnity, the taste of a holiday.

- But today is a special day and differs from other similar days in the sense that there are more of us. Not just those who are free, but those who know that freedom must be fought for.

Today we have returned to us someone who does not need to explain who the aggressor is today and where the threat comes from. Someone who has lost neither honor nor freedom even while in prison. Who did not allow himself to be pushed out of his homeland. Someone who knows the price of choosing between light and darkness. Who knows that you can't indulge a terrorist dictator. That you cannot embrace criminals or shake the bloody hands of executioners. That there is nothing more shameful than trading in the future of your people.

There is again someone to compare the system with. On whom to look without reservations and discounts. From whom you do not expect betrayal, meanness and hypocrisy. Thank you, Nikolai Viktorovich, that you are with us again.
