The AFU Destroyed All Russian BMO-Ts

Elite armored vehicles are missing from the front.

The Russian army may have lost almost all BMO-T flamethrower combat vehicles during the full-scale war against Ukraine. According to available information, only one such vehicle may remain in Russian service today or there may be none left, writes Ukrainian military expert Alexander Kovalenko.

BMO-T is a heavy armored fighting vehicle designed to transport personnel of a flamethrower unit. It is considered to be one of the rarest and at the same time most protected combat vehicles in the Russian armament nomenclature.

BMO-T surpasses most other Russian combat vehicles in terms of armor and has virtually no analogues, except for the Terminator-2 BMPT. Both vehicles are based on the T-72 tank, but their defenses have been refined much better than those of the T-90M "Breakthrough" tank.

Over the course of the full-scale war in Ukraine, according to verified data, at least three BMO-Ts have been destroyed, with Ukrainian forces capturing another vehicle. The last recorded trophy BMO-T was in July 2023. At the same time, according to unconfirmed information, the number of destroyed vehicles may be as high as five, and two trophy vehicles.

Experts note that the key problem of BMO-T for the Russian army was its high cost - approximately 400-500 thousand dollars per unit. Because of this, the Russian Defense Ministry did not place new orders for the production of these vehicles, despite their high survivability and ability to preserve the lives of the crew.

The lack of new contracts and losses on the frontline suggest that the BMO-T has virtually disappeared as a type of combat equipment for Russian troops in the war against Ukraine.
