The U.S. initially supported the Ukrainians' intentions.
U.S. intelligence could have known about the preparations to undermine the "Nord Stream" gas pipelines at an early stage of planning the operation. This is stated in an investigation by the German publication Der Spiegel.
According to journalists' sources, meetings between representatives of the Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) and Ukrainian specialists in subversive operations were held in Kiev in the spring of 2022. It was then, according to the journalists' sources, that the Ukrainian side allegedly presented the idea of blowing up gas pipelines that Russia used to transport gas to Germany, thus financing the war against Ukraine. According to the Ukrainian side, the Americans liked the plan.
The publication writes that further meetings between CIA representatives and the organizers of the attacks on the gas pipelines took place after that. Der Spiegel spoke to several people in Ukraine, who provided details of these meetings.
The sources say the idea emerged in the spring of 2022, in the midst of a full-scale invasion, when there was a need to deal Russia a painful blow.
One of the sources said that already at the second meeting there was a signal of support from the CIA, and even more: on the Ukrainian side there was the impression that American agents could help finance the plan.
Afterwards, however, the U.S. position changed. According to Spiegel, in the summer of 2022, the CIA said that it could not support the operation, in particular financially. No direct explanation was given.
"In the spring of 2022, Washington's interests were quite different, according to sources in U.S. intelligence agencies. At that time, the focus was on organizing as much support for Ukraine as possible. Why would the US justify an attack on an ally's infrastructure?" - journalists write.
In addition, the material says, in June 2022, there was a leak of information: the Dutch military intelligence MIVD through a source in Ukraine learned of the attack plans and alerted the CIA and the German Federal Intelligence Service.
The Germans then, in the summer of 2022, allegedly were skeptical.
