But no longer without the United States.
The largest NATO exercise of the year has begun on the Baltic Sea coast in Schleswig-Holstein. The operation is called "Steadfast Dart 26" and provides for the absence of U.S. participation.
It is reported Bild.
The publication writes that units of the Allied Reaction Force landed at the Putlos training range near the German island of Femarn.
"According to the scenario, a rapid transfer of troops from the south of Europe to the eastern flank is practiced. The peculiarity of the maneuvers is the absence of direct participation of the United States," the publication says.
The landing itself involved 15 ships and about 2,600 military personnel. In general, the exercise involves about 10,000 soldiers, more than 1,500 vehicles and 17 ships from 13 countries.
"The largest contingents sent Turkey, Spain, Italy and Greece. German Defense Minister Boris Pistorius is overseeing the maneuvers," Bild wrote.
The publication added that the Allied Reaction Force troops are called NATO's "tip of the spear." In the event of a crisis, they are said to deploy up to 40,000 soldiers within ten days. The decision on such a deployment is made by NATO's North Atlantic Council.
