The EU is ready to act.
The European Union may impose a complete ban on maritime services for Russian oil tankers even without agreement with the G7 countries, including the United States.
This was stated by European Commission Vice President and European Commissioner for Economy Valdis Dombrovskis, writes Eurastiv.
He said that the support of the G7 is desirable, but "is not an absolute prerequisite" for the decision. If a broader international agreement is not reached, the EU is ready to act on its own.
"The more coherence we can achieve, including at the G7 level, the better. But we will not shy away from taking action at EU level if a broader agreement is not reached," he said.
The naval ban is a key element of the 20th package of sanctions against Russia that Brussels is seeking to agree on by the fourth anniversary of the full-scale invasion. It aims to limit the Kremlin's ability to transport oil and cut funding for the war against Ukraine.
The new package also includes additional import and export restrictions, expanded sanctions lists for banks and "shadow fleet" vessels.
