Border regions are feeling the effects of Putin's aggression firsthand.
Almost four years have passed since the beginning of Russia's full-scale invasion of Ukraine. The consequences of the war are measured not only by the destroyed Ukrainian cities, but also by the situation in the border regions of Russia itself. This is what Bloomberg writes.
"Millions of Ukrainians are enduring one of the coldest winters in years without reliable power or heating as waves of Russian missile and drone attacks have destroyed energy infrastructure. Tens of thousands of Russians living on the country's western border are now facing similar difficulties as cross-border strikes damage essential utilities, forcing authorities to take emergency measures," the piece noted.
The Russian city of Belgorod, about 40 kilometers from Ukraine, has become the most visible illustration of the growing domestic costs of Russia's war.
"The city of about 322,000 people is struggling with severe damage to the energy network after Ukraine's missile strikes, which have been so far The president makes no mention of the plight of border communities, which is rarely raised in government meetings and is virtually absent from national TV coverage. Information about the extent of the damage comes mostly from regional authorities, who reveal details only occasionally. And no one criticizes Putin for bringing the war to their doors," the publication stressed.
In particular, Belgorod Region Governor Vyacheslav Gladkov said that restoring hot water supply to homes would probably not be possible until the end of the winter heating season. The temperature in Belgorod itself is now minus 10 °C.
"Last week, Gladkov said that the attacks left some 80,000 residents without heating, about 3,000 without gas supply and about 1,000 without electricity. Authorities announced a partial evacuation: children, large families, households with disabled children and elderly people living on their own will be relocated to neighboring regions until the situation stabilizes," the material recalled.
