Azerbaijan Condemned The Head Of Nagorno-Karabakh

20 years in prison.

Armenian-born, "ex-Minister" of Nagorno-Karabakh, 57-year-old Ruben Vardanyan has been sentenced by a military court in Baku to 20 years in prison. This was reported by 1News.az on Tuesday, February 17.

Vardanyan was charged under a number of articles of the Criminal Code of Azerbaijan, including financing of terrorism, creation of illegal armed formations, illegal crossing of the state border, premeditated murder, violent seizure of power, as well as organization of armed groups not provided for by the law.

Ruben Vardanyan did not admit guilt and called the process political. The prosecution requested a life sentence for him.

Ruben Vardanian was previously the owner of the investment company Troika Dialog, and he is one of the co-founders of the Skolkovo business school. Vardanian was included in the list of the richest people in Russia according to Forbes magazine.

In September 2022, Vardanian announced his renunciation of Russian citizenship and moved to Nagorno-Karabakh. From November 2022 to February 2023, he headed the "government" of the unrecognized Nagorno-Karabakh republic.

The Azerbaijani Border Guard Service detained Vardanyan on September 27, 2023, as he attempted to leave Nagorno-Karabakh for Armenia. Since then, he has been held under arrest in Baku.
