Rubio: US Not Forcing Anyone To Agree To Ukraine Deal
Marco Rubio

He said Washington is playing the role of mediator in the talks.

The US plays the role of mediator in peace talks between Ukraine and Russia. Washington will not force the parties to sign a deal.

As RBC-Ukraine reports, US Secretary of State Marco Rubio said this at a joint press conference with Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban.

Rubio said the US is the only country that has been able to bring Ukraine and Russia to the talks. It is the first time in a large number of years that military officials from the two countries have met for dialog.

"All we are trying to do is play a role, if possible, in reaching an agreement. We're not trying to impose an agreement on anybody. We're not trying to force anyone to accept an agreement that they don't want to accept. We just want to help them," the State Department chief said.

He emphasized that Russia's war against Ukraine is incredibly damaging to the two countries.

"We believe this is a war that should never have happened and should end as soon as possible," Rubio added.

The secretary of state pointed out that his country will continue to "do everything we can to end the war" as long as Washington's role is positive.
