Vladimir Padrino Lopez has led the country's Department of Defense for nearly 12 years.
The top echelons of the National Bolivarian Armed Forces (Fuerza Armada Nacional Bolivariana, FANB) are discussing the issue of succession in the military establishment due to "extreme dissatisfaction" with the current leadership's long stay in power after the capture of Nicolas Maduro. This was reported by El Pais, citing sources in the Venezuelan armed forces.
They said discontent is also caused by the tenure of Venezuelan Defense Minister Vladimir Padrino Lopez. He has headed the military for nearly 12 years, making him "one of the untouchables," the publication noted.
The Venezuelan military complains of a "bottle neck" in promotions due to years of tenure by the same commanders, including the defense minister. The general staff is also concerned that key security figures have not resigned since the Jan. 3 U.S. attack even though they "failed their mission," El Pais reports.
"Their refusal to resign is perceived as a scandal by the general staff," a source explained to the newspaper.
