Russia Has Problems On The Home Front

The Ukrainian armed forces are seizing the initiative in the South.

The advance of Russian troops in Ukraine has slowed down noticeably. According to the OSINT project DeepState, the Russian army was able to occupy only 36 square kilometers over the past week. This is the lowest figure in recent months and the minimum dynamics since early April last year, writes dialog.ua.

The situation is getting worse for Russia

Even estimates by the US-based Institute for the Study of War (ISW), which traditionally uses more cautious language, point to a decline. According to ISW's version, Russian forces occupied 74 square kilometers in the same week - almost half as much as in late January, when the pace was at its highest.

The AFU is retaking the initiative in the South

In parallel, Ukrainian forces have conducted a series of counterattacks in the Zaporizhzhya region. According to Western analysts and Ukrainian military observers, the AFU units were able to advance deep into the enemy positions and regain control over a number of settlements near Gulyaypol.

Experts attribute the Ukrainian side's successes to the deterioration of communications with the Russian forces, as well as to technological limitations. Separately, they note the impact of communication and management problems, which have become an increasingly prominent factor on the battlefield in recent months.

Moscow's arguments are weakening

The slowdown in the offensive comes amid preparations for new talks in Geneva. Analysts point out that the slower pace of the advance deprives Moscow of one of its key arguments - a demonstration of military momentum.
