Ukrainian attacks on the southern front are gaining momentum.
Military expert Alexander Kovalenko reported that in the southern direction, including in the Zaporizhzhya region, the Ukrainian Defense Forces have stepped up tactical counterattacks on certain sections of the front.
In his assessment, these actions are of a localized nature, but give a noticeable result because they are aimed at improving positions and disrupting the plans of Russian troops.
Kovalenko emphasizes that the transition to counterattacks became possible when Russian units had problems with quality communication and coordination after the blocking of Starlink.
In such conditions, Ukrainian forces use the moment to act quickly and pinpoint, regaining control over important areas.
Russian forces weakening
One of the key factors was a serious depletion of the enemy's offensive capabilities in certain directions.
The 5th All-Russian Army has suffered heavy losses and lost its former striking power since the fall of 2025. This reduces the ability of Russian forces to keep the pace and sustainably pressurize AFU positions.
With this weakening, the Ukrainian side has more room to maneuver and conduct tactical-level actions, without attempts to "run forward at any cost," but with an eye on terrain and logistical advantage.
What has improved on the directions
Kovalenko lists the areas where, in his assessment, Ukrainian units have made advances and improved the situation: the AFU pushed back Russian forces from Novoalexandrovka, Verbovoye and Vishnevoye, taking advantage of the fact that the enemy was weakened by the transfer of resources to other tasks.
In the area near the Gaichul River, Russian units, according to the expert, were pushed back to the left bank, which strengthens the Ukrainian side's position on this line.
In the Stepnogorsk bridgehead, the Ukrainian armed forces are holding the city and knocked out the Russian military from Primorsky, clearing the northern part of the settlement, and also improved the situation in the Lukyanivka area.
The expert notes that such counterattacks have a practical effect. They level the front line, remove dangerous protrusions, return convenient lines and expand opportunities for further actions at the tactical level.
The Telegraph earlier reported that Ukraine's defense forces launched a counteroffensive on the southern front line after Russian occupiers were banned from using Starlink terminals.
