And In This Zelensky Is Absolutely Right

Ukraine will not agree to such "security guarantees".

At the Munich conference, Vladimir Zelensky touched upon the most problematic issues of trilateral negotiations between Ukraine, the US and Russia. He said that Ukraine cannot agree to the withdrawal of troops from unoccupied Donbass in exchange for abstract promises of peace.

He said that the US side broadcasts the thesis that the withdrawal of Ukrainian forces from Donbass will allegedly become a guarantee of peace. However, Zelensky is convinced: the true goal of the Russian Federation is a complete seizure of Ukraine. And in this the Ukrainian leader is absolutely right.

The discussion about security guarantees for Ukraine was no less revealing. The problem lies not only in the order of their provision and signing an agreement with Moscow - Washington insists that such guarantees should come into force only after the war is over. As it turns out, there are disagreements between the US and Ukraine on the terms of their validity.

According to Zelensky, the US offers security guarantees for a period much shorter than necessary, and Ukraine does not agree with this approach: "Today we have a proposal for security guarantees from the US for 15 years. We want to have more than 20 years - 30, 50. We will see what the administration and Congress will agree to."

Discussing temporary limitations on security guarantees for a country that has already been promised indefinite protection of its independence and territorial integrity in exchange for giving up nuclear weapons borders on insanity. After that, it is hard to be surprised by the behavior of, for example, Iran, which is engaged in open blackmail in the nuclear negotiations, demanding the lifting of sanctions as proof that the United States is serious about its intentions.

According to all appearances, Medinsky's return to the Russian negotiating delegation is by no means the most alarming sign of the possible failure of the talks.
