Marco Rubio: US And Europe Are One And The Same

A united West has won many conflicts.

U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio, delivering a speech at the Munich Security Conference, emphasized the close ties between the United States and Europe, Deutsche Welle reported.

He particularly recalled how the United States and Europe together won many conflicts of the 20th century. "The euphoria after that triumph," the U.S. secretary of state said, led to the "dangerous delusion" that all nations would become liberal democracies, that national sovereignty was no longer important but ties based solely on trade, and that "we would live in a world without borders." "It was a stupid idea, and it has cost us dearly," he said.

Rubio believes the U.S. and Europe made a mistake when they allowed large-scale migration, moved production overseas, and handed control of critical supplies to "rivals and enemies." He cited energy policy dictated by the fight against climate change as another mistake. The U.S., he said, intends to correct those mistakes - and would like to do so with Europe. The United States is "not looking to sever relations," the secretary of state emphasized - it wants to "rekindle old friendships."

We don't want our allies to be weak, because that makes us weak too. We want allies who can defend themselves so that no one is tempted to test our collective strength. We want Europe to be strong. We believe Europe must survive.

Rubio acknowledged that Americans can seem "a little bit blunt and insistent in their advice": "The reason, my friends, is that we care a lot about this."

Rubio's speech at the Munich conference, CNN and The Guardian note, was greeted much more favorably than last year's speech by U.S. Vice President J.D. Vance. In particular, the secretary of state was repeatedly applauded.
