European leaders should be present at the talks.

French President Emmanuel Macron has said that European leaders must be present at the talks on Ukraine. Otherwise, he believes, they will not bring peace.

The Guardian reports The Guardian.

"There is no peace without the Europeans. I want to be very clear: you can negotiate without Europeans if you want, but that will not bring peace to the negotiating table," Macron said.

He said it was for this reason that Europe needed to re-establish diplomatic channels with Russia to avoid relying on others - mainly the US - to negotiate.

Macron said Europe had done its job on Ukraine by "strengthening its support for the war-torn country and rallying a coalition".

"When I hear some defeatist speeches about Ukraine, when I hear some leaders calling on Ukraine to admit its defeat by overestimating Russia's price in this war, this is a huge strategic mistake because this is not reality," he said.

The French president stressed that the EU must ensure that the settlement protects Ukraine and preserves European security. In addition, he said, the agreement "must discourage Russia from trying again, and also avoid giving the rest of the world a disastrous example to follow."

The French leader also noted the need to develop "rules of coexistence" with the aggressor country after the war in Ukraine.

In particular, Macron recalled that Europe's security dynamics with Russia have often been determined by "old treaties" drafted or concluded without Europeans at the negotiating table.

"We must be the ones to negotiate this new security architecture for Europe the next day, because our geography will not change," he said.

In addition, Macron called for "a series of consultations on this important issue," and noted that some preliminary work has already been done with Germany and Britain.
