The sportscaster admitted it had "been an emotional morning".
The president of the International Olympic Committee (IOC) Kirsty Coventry cried after the disqualification of Ukrainian skeleton player Vladyslav Heraskevich from the 2026 Games in Milan.
The functionary noted that the athlete's desire to wear a "memory helmet" is inappropriate for the competition.
Coventry herself said this in comments to reporters from the Reuters news agency. She said she had specifically met with Heraskiewicz before the start of the races on the morning of February 12 to persuade him to give up a banned piece of equipment depicting Ukrainian athletes killed in Russian military aggression.

"I didn't plan to be here, but I thought it was very important to come and talk to him personally. Nobody, especially me, disputes the message that he wanted to make. It's a powerful message, it's a message of remembrance. The challenge was to find a solution for the competition area. Unfortunately, we were not able to do that. I really wanted to see him race. It was an emotional morning," Coventry said.

Reminder, the IOC cynically suggested Geraskiewicz wear a black armband to honor his compatriots. In response, the skeleton athlete put the organizers of the 2026 Olympics in their place, noting that he was not going to comply.
