The US president's goals for the island remain unclear.
President Donald Trump said the U.S. is beginning talks with Cuba's leadership.
It was reported by AP.
Trump did not provide any details on what level of recent contact his administration has had with Cuba or when, only saying: "We are beginning negotiations with Cuba."
Oil Supplies
It is noted that Trump signed an executive order last week imposing duties on any goods from countries that sell or supply oil to Cuba. The move created pressure on Mexico, on which Cuba has become dependent after Trump halted oil shipments from Venezuela following Maduro's ouster.
For her part, Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum warned that it could cause a humanitarian crisis. On Friday, she said she would look for alternatives to continue aid to Cuba.
"It doesn't have to be a humanitarian crisis. I think they will probably come to us and want to make an agreement. That way Cuba will be free again," Trump said Saturday.
Agreement with Cuba
He believes the U.S. will make some kind of agreement with Cuba, and said: "I think, you know, we're going to be kind."
It's worth noting that Trump's goals for Cuba remain unclear. He turned more attention to the island after his administration captured then-Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro in early January.
