The Serpent Bearer system took center stage.

Researchers have discovered a potential Earth-sized exoplanet that may be orbiting a binary star system.

This discovery supports the hypothesis that even in binary star systems, planets with conditions potentially suitable for life may exist, according to Science Alert.

Scientists focused their attention on the 70 Ophiuchi (70 Oph AB) system, which consists of two orange dwarfs. According to calculations, their masses are approximately 88% and 73% of the Sun’s mass, and their age is estimated to be about three billion years.

To study the system, researchers analyzed both current and archived measurements of the stars’ radial velocities. The study utilized data from eight instruments, covering observations of the primary star over the course of roughly a century.

Stable orbits are theoretically possible within the main star’s habitable zone. Despite the presence of a second star, it does not necessarily make such orbits unstable.

The 70 Ophiuchi system has long been known to astronomers. As early as 1855, the British scientist William Jacob hypothesized that a planet orbited these stars. This was one of the first historical instances of a putative exoplanet discovery.

The new study helps us better understand how common planets are in binary star systems and whether they could exist in conditions favorable for the emergence of life.
