The US president said that "Republicans should be ashamed of themselves".
Republicans should be ashamed of the senators who voted with the Democrats in an attempt to take away the White House administration's authority to defend the United States. This is how U.S. leader Donald Trump reacted to a bipartisan resolution by senators limiting his decisions on Venezuela.
"Susan Collins, Lisa Murkowski, Rand Paul, Josh Hawley and Todd Young should never be elected to office again. This vote significantly weakens American self-defense and national security, and impedes the President's authority as Commander-in-Chief. "In any case, and despite their 'stupidity,' the War Powers Act is unconstitutional, in complete violation of Article II of the Constitution, as previously determined by all presidents and their Justice Departments," Trump said.
He noted that there will be a more important Senate vote next week on this very issue.
Reminder, the U.S. Senate voted on January 8 in favor of a bipartisan resolution that would prohibit President Donald Trump from using military force "in or against Venezuela" without prior congressional approval. All 47 Democrats who voted in favor were joined by five Republicans.
The full Senate vote on the resolution will take place next week. It would require a simple majority to pass and is expected to be approved. However, the document must pass the House and get the president's signature, so it is unlikely to become law. Nevertheless, the resolution sends a strong signal to Trump that could influence his future foreign policy moves - both on Venezuela and elsewhere.
