The Venezuelan Government Announced The Beginning Of The Process Of Releasing Political Prisoners

Venezuela has 893 political prisoners in detention centers, including 86 foreigners.

Venezuela's national government announced the beginning of the process of releasing "a significant number of Venezuelan and foreign nationals" from prisons. The announcement was made by the president of the National Assembly, Jorge Rodriguez, reports Venezolana de Television.

"In order to contribute and promote the efforts that all must make for the sake of national unity and peaceful coexistence, the Bolivarian government, together with state institutions, has decided to release a significant number of Venezuelan and foreign nationals, and these release processes are beginning as of this moment," Rodriguez said.

The politician added that this gesture by the Bolivarian government is motivated by a "sincere desire for peace."

According to Human Rights Watch, as of December 8 last year, 893 political prisoners, including 86 foreigners, were being held in Venezuelan detention centers. Many have been subjected to enforced disappearances, arbitrary and incommunicado regimes, and denial of due process. At least 90 suffer from serious illnesses and receive grossly inadequate treatment.
