Lukashenko Lashes Out At US Over Seizure Of Russian Tanker Mariner

Alexander Lukashenko said that while negotiating with the Americans, he warned not only Belarusians, but also Russians that the U.S. "may be playing a kind of performance." This is how he commented on the seizure of Russian oil tankers by the U.S..

"I always told them, but I also warned my older brother, and right on the eve of this disgusting event (we are talking about the events around the U.S. and Venezuela. - Note): there would not be only a play on the part of the Americans and the whole West, they would not play another trick on us. And today I am absolutely convinced that this is true. Why was it necessary to seize just recently an empty Russian tanker under the flag of Russia? Why was it necessary to do that if you want peace in Ukraine? And many, many thoughts are born after these events," said Lukashenko.

We will recall that on January 7, the U.S. announced the seizure of the oil tanker Mariner, which was sailing under the Russian flag, in the Atlantic Ocean. Earlier Russia sent a nuclear submarine to escort it. Later it became known about the seizure of another "shadow fleet" vessel.

In addition, the U.S. Army Southern Command reported that in the morning of January 7, another sanctioned "shadow fleet" tanker "Sofia" was detained.

The White House said that the crew of the seized tanker could face prosecution by the United States.
