Earlier, the U.S. president said that Chinese and Russian ships are already surrounding the island.
US President Donald Trump is discussing the purchase of Greenland with his national security team. White House Press Secretary Carolyn Levitt said this at a briefing.
She said the United States needs Greenland to "deter aggressive actions by Russia and China in the Arctic region," so Trump's team is "now discussing what a potential purchase might look like."
Levitt added that Greenland would give the United States "more control over the Arctic region." There are also many other benefits, she added.
On Jan. 5, Trump said that for the national security of the United States and the European Union, Americans should own Greenland. He said Denmark, which controls the island, is incapable of providing security, while ships from China and Russia already surround the island.
