The U.S. is pushing China and Russia out of Latin America.
The US has conducted a special operation to remove dictator Nicolas Maduro, but the Chavista top brass retain power inside Venezuela. Will they be able to keep power in Venezuela?
About this, Charter97.org spoke with Ukrainian political technologist and managing partner of the National Anti-Crisis Group Taras Zagorodniy:
- Look what the US special operation has shown. Washington does not want to get involved in any frontal attacks, guerrilla wars - what Russia and China expected from them. The US made everything very simple and clear. They showed the power of the Pentagon, they showed that they can do it.
And the removal of Maduro is a pressure on the same Chavista elites. That is: you guys can stay here, but you will act within clearly limited frameworks. There can be no Russia, no China in Venezuela. No oil supplies to Cuba, because Cuba is next on this path. And if not understood immediately, the next president may end up in an American prison. This has a very strong effect on the elites.
And further - deal with it as you wish, we are not going to deal with you. But you realized that China, Russia and Iran should not be in Venezuela. It should not be used as a springboard for an attack on the United States of America.
- What are the most likely scenarios for Venezuela now?
- I think that some elections will be held, the government will stabilize. But this power will already realize that Russia and China cannot be there. Most likely, the US access to Venezuela's oil fields will be discussed. It was clearly stated that there can be no threats against Guyana, because Maduro has previously threatened Guyana, and there is oil production there by American companies.
After the elections, perhaps some followers of Maduro may remain in power, but they will act within a clearly limited framework, which will be strictly outlined by the United States.
- What steps might the US take in the region next?"
- Along the same lines, Cuba will be next, because it's also a personal issue for Marco Rubio - he comes from a Cuban family. Cuba will likely be saying goodbye to that communist regime too, because it was held together at the expense of Venezuela, which supplied the oil. Now it has been made clear to Venezuela that there can be no support with oil and other resources from other countries. The same is true of Colombia.
That is, the US has shown that it has the power, it has the technology - no armaments or anything else will save you. This is the actual realization of the Monroe Doctrine: the entire Western Hemisphere is a zone of exclusive interests of the United States. But the main thing who should not be in Latin America is China.
Now the whole policy of Donald Trump is aimed at pushing China out of Latin America. That includes Panama, Venezuela, Colombia, and other countries. I think what the U.S. has shown is this: if you don't behave as you've been told, if you start flirting with China again, you're going to end up in a U.S. prison. That's, you know, very sobering for politicians in Latin America. Because it's one thing to invade a country: guerrilla warfare, risks for Americans, losses of American soldiers. It's another thing when you personally end up in an American prison. That's an extremely unpleasant situation. That's how the US sets the frame.
