The former Canadian deputy prime minister will oversee Ukraine's economic development.
Ukrainian President Vladimir Zelensky announced the appointment of former Finance Minister and Deputy Prime Minister of Canada, Ukrainian-born Christia Freeland as an economic development advisor.
Zelensky announced his decision on Monday, January 5.
"Hristia is professionally skilled in exactly such issues and has significant experience in attracting investment and economic transformation," the president said in a statement.
The Ukrainian leader also emphasized that the country now needs to build internal resilience - for the sake of recovery if diplomacy works as quickly as possible.
"And for the sake of strengthening our defense, if because of the delay partners will have to work longer to end the war," Vladimir Zelensky stressed.
Canadian Deputy Prime Minister Hristia Freeland is perhaps one of the most influential Ukrainian women on the world political scene, wrote NV magazine in August 2020, naming 20 Ukrainian women who have achieved world-class results in politics, arts, sports, science and technology.
The Canadian politician got her Ukrainian blood from her mother, who was born in a refugee camp from Ukraine in Germany. The future deputy prime minister was born already in Canada, and received her education in the United States and the United Kingdom, at Harvard and Oxford Universities.
Christia Freeland has been an important figure in Canadian politics since 2015, when the Liberals came to power, and worked as deputy to former Prime Minister Justin Trudeau.
She held key positions in the government and in 2020 became the first woman to serve as Canada's finance minister. Freeland abruptly resigned as finance minister in December 2024, hours before she was due to deliver her fall economic statement, causing shock in Ottawa.
Her resignation increased pressure on Trudeau and was one of the reasons for the start of an intra-party leadership struggle.
Besides financial matters, Freeland had a major influence on Canada's foreign policy. She headed the Ministries of International Trade and Foreign Affairs and led the Canadian negotiating team during U.S. President Donald Trump's first term, which led to the signing of a trade agreement.
In September 2025, Freeland announced that she was stepping down as Canada's Minister of Transportation and Internal Trade.
Then Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney asked Freeland to become special representative for Ukraine's reconstruction.
