A Group That Traded In Timber From Belarus And Russia Was Detained Near Gdansk

The deliveries were made in circumvention of EU sanctions.

As polskieradio.pl reports, officers of the maritime division of the Border Guard and the National Customs and Tax Service took part in the operation to suppress their criminal activities.

The group, which consisted of three Polish and two Russian citizens (their ages range from 43 to 64), traded in goods received from Russian and Belarusian partners in circumvention of EU sanctions. Including - during the so-called transitional period - they imitated deliveries allegedly under previously concluded contracts with Russian and Belarusian partners. After the end of this period, they used a fictitious indication of the origin of wood from Kazakhstan and Turkey, as well as misclassification of goods by customs codes to create the appearance of importing products not subject to sanctions," said prosecutor Mariusz Duszyński.

The incriminated crimes, the defendants face a penalty of imprisonment for a term of 3 to 30 years. The prosecutor's office emphasizes that the investigation is ongoing and it is possible that other persons will be charged.
