UN Secretary-General António Guterres has warned that the organization is at risk of "imminent financial collapse" due to non-payment of dues and budgetary constraints. This was stated in a letter to representatives of UN member states, excerpts of which are quoted by Reuters.
Guterres said the "crisis is deepening," with the situation threatening the implementation of the organization's programs. He said the UN could run out of money by July, and member states must either pay their contributions in full and on time or revise their financial rules.
The UN has faced difficulties after the United States, the organization's largest donor, sharply cut transfers to the UN's regular and peacekeeping budgets, the agency said.
By December, member states' total debt to the UN stood at nearly $1.6 billion, Guterres said at the time. Five weeks before the end of the year, 48 countries had not paid their membership fees in full. Among them were the United States and Russia, while China had paid its debt in full, the UN noted. A few days later, the organization's leadership said Russia had contributed $71 million, thereby "fully paying its contribution to the regular budget."
