Instead of autos, the company will assemble humanoid robots.
Tesla CEO American multibillionaire Ilon Musk announced during a conference call with investors that production of Model S and Model X electric cars, one of Tesla's most expensive models, will cease. They are scheduled to be phased out in the second quarter of 2026, U.S. television channel CNN reported on the night of Thursday, January 29, local time. According to Musk, the Fremont, California plant where the Model S and Model X were produced will be retooled to produce Optimus humanoid robots.
In addition, the Tesla CEO "seemed to hint that selling the electric cars the company helped bring to the global mass market will soon be a secondary issue for it," CNN emphasized. Tesla announced the discontinuation of its two flagship electric car models amid a significant drop in profits and sales recorded at the end of 2025.
The discontinuation of production of the two models will not significantly affect Tesla's turnover
According to the publication, the abandonment of the Model S and Model X is unlikely to significantly affect the turnover of Ilon Musk's company. "The discontinuation of the Model S and Model X will have a limited impact on Tesla's sales. Together, they represent only 3 percent of the company's total worldwide deliveries," the channel states.
CNN also notes that Tesla's image among many U.S. and European consumers has been significantly affected by Musk's political activism and cooperation with U.S. President Donald Trump during the campaign and the first months of Trump's presidency - during Musk's tenure at the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE).
