Germany is not an intermediary.
German Chancellor Friedrich Merz has rejected calls from the Bundestag to hold direct talks with Russian dictator Vladimir Putin over the war in Ukraine.
He said the talks should first and foremost be held between Ukraine and Russia
"These are two warring parties. We are not acting as a mediator here," Merz said.
He said Germany is following these talks "with great support" and firmly hopes that they will be concluded as soon as possible.
Frank German Vice Chancellor Lars Klingbeil added in turn that the talks are currently taking place mainly between Ukraine and Russia.
"The question of whether and when the time will come for European heads of state and government to talk directly to Putin again will have to be decided later," Klingbeil said.
He also emphasized that he does not see this dialog taking place now.
