The motor ship "Konstantin Simonov" will become a floating barracks for 150 military men.
Denmark is planning to send a floating barracks to strengthen its military grouping in Greenland. The floating barracks will be the former Soviet motor ship Konstantin Simonov, now called MS Ocean Endeavour.
This is reported by Bild.
The former Soviet motor ship Konstantin Simonov will become a floating barracks for 150 Danish military personnel in Greenland. It is being moved as part of an increase in the Danish military presence on the island.
The fact is that the city of Nuuk, Greenland's capital, is not designed for such an influx of military personnel. Denmark is now housing soldiers and officers in hotels and vacation homes. That's why the Ocean Endeavour floating barracks was sent to the island.
In 1982, the Soviet Far Eastern Shipping Company ordered a motor ship with a reinforced hull, which went into service under the name "Konstantin Simonov". It served as a ferry until the collapse of the USSR, then it was bought out and renamed Ocean Endeavour. In 2025, the ship's owner, the American shipping company SunStone, put it up for sale.
Sudno was purchased by Denmark, which will turn it into a floating barracks for NATO military personnel. Back on January 23, the 1,762-ton Ocean Endeavour set sail for Nuuk from Ouistreham in France. It will anchor in Greenland's capital.
At the publication's request, the Danish Armed Forces Command confirmed the ship's departure to Greenland.
"Part of the Danish and international soldiers who will take part in the Arctic Endurance exercise in Greenland next year will be housed on the Ocean Endeavour from the beginning of February. The hotel ship will be located in the port of Nuuk... The troops will be able to live in good conditions without the need for temporary accommodation on land," the statement said.
