German Foreign Minister: Ukraine Needs A Fair Chance Of EU Membership

Ukraine's accession to the EU is in the interests of the Europeans.

The prospect of Ukraine's membership in the European Union is an important contribution to ensuring a future peaceful settlement for this country, which has been subjected to a military attack by Russia. German Foreign Minister Johann Wadeful said this during the government hour in the Bundestag on Wednesday, January 28, DW reports.

"A sustainable architecture for peace in Europe presupposes that Ukraine will get a fair chance to join the European Union," Wadeful, a Christian Democrat, said. He did not comment on the timing of Kiev's possible membership.

"Today it may seem like a distant prospect, but it is still in the fundamental interests of both Germany and all of us Europeans to ensure that this country can win the fight against the Russian aggressor and not be defeated," the German foreign minister emphasized.

The European Union is perceived around the world as an exemplary model of a union partnership of several states, so the aspiration of many other countries to become members of the European Union remains unchanged, Johann Wadeful said, noting the importance of Europe's continued ability to "act, make decisions and continue to develop."
