The country is ramping up imports from the U.S., Canada and the Middle East.
India will continue to reduce its imports of Russian crude oil. One of the world's biggest oil buyers is getting serious about diversifying suppliers, reports Bloomberg.
Indian oil minister Hardeep Puri said supplies from Russia have already fallen to 1.3 million barrels a day, he said. Earlier they were 1.8 million barrels.
"There is a downward trend. This is due to market conditions," he said.
Puri also added that the Indian government has not given any authority to Indian companies to buy Russian oil. The companies act at their own risk and make their own decisions.
At the same time, the country now has the opportunity to diversify its oil suppliers, in particular, the companies want to increase their purchases of oil from Canada and the United States. In total, India now buys oil from 41 countries.
Reduction of oil supplies to India
Even in December 2025, there was a downward trend in oil supplies from Russia to India. They amounted to about 1.2 million barrels per day, renewing a three-year low. In January, the figure fell even more sharply, to an average of 1.12 million barrels per day.
In December 2025, Russia experienced a massive drop in crude oil production. And Russia's total oil exports fell to their lowest level since August 2025. This includes as imports to India have fallen to their lowest level. Now only China remains the only available market for oil from Russian Federation.
Because of US sanctions and pressure from Washington, Indian refiners are changing their oil procurement strategy. India plans to buy more oil from the Middle East and the US. Oil purchases from Latin American countries, primarily Venezuela, are also being considered.
