The pressure will be intensified.
A group of 14 EU countries has warned tankers of Russia's "shadow fleet" in the Baltic and North Seas. Those that fail to meet certain requirements will be treated as stateless vessels.
This was reported by Bloomberg.
The countries said in a joint statement that the tankers can only fly the flag of one state and must have valid safety and insurance documents. Those ships that do not comply with these requirements will be considered stateless vessels, according to the global maritime treaty.
By recognizing tankers as stateless, countries can strengthen their ability to interfere with such vessels.
Bloomberg notes that the statement formalizes actions that several EU countries have taken in recent weeks to increase pressure on Russia's "shadow fleet" vessels.
European countries have accused Russia of interfering with satellite positioning and navigation systems, jeopardizing international shipping.
The statement also notes the need to develop alternative ground-based radio navigation systems to serve as a backup in case satellite systems are disrupted.
