Xi Jinping Launches Global Purge Among Generals: Hidden Agenda Revealed
Xi Jinping

The U.S. ambassador to China has revealed some interesting details.

Chinese President Si Jinping is using purges in the top military leadership not only to fight corruption but also to take total control of the armed forces, U.S. Ambassador to China David Perdue said in an interview with Bloomberg.

The U.S. diplomat called the investigation against the vice chairman of China's Central Military Commission, Zhang Yuxia, "an important development." Chinese authorities earlier said the senior official was being probed on suspicion of "serious violations of discipline and law," without disclosing details.

Purdue said the purges in the military leadership are two-fold.

"I take him at his word that there is a fight against corruption now, that he is trying to correct decades of corruption in the military," the ambassador said, referring to Xi Jinping.

At the same time, he added:

"On the other hand, I think he is making sure he has full control over his military."

High Command Investigation

Perdue did not directly comment on The Wall Street Journal's report that Zhang Yuxia allegedly passed classified information about China's nuclear program to the United States. A Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman said he was not familiar with the allegations.

After a series of investigations that also implicated Joint Chief of Staff Liu Zhenli, only two members remain on China's seven-member Central Military Commission, according to diplomats.
