A Ferry Sank In The Southern Philippines With Hundreds Of People On Board

At least 15 people died.

The ferry Trisha Kerstin 3 sank in the southern waters of the Philippines on the night of January 26. There were 332 passengers and 27 crew members on board.

Associated Press reports Associated Press.

The Coast Guard says at least 316 people have been rescued, while the search for the missing continues. During the rescue operations, rescuers have already recovered at least 15 bodies of the dead, while 43 people are reported missing.

The incident occurred about one nautical mile off the coast of Basilan province. The ferry was heading to Jolo Island in Sulu province when it reportedly encountered technical problems and sank.

The Coast Guard, Navy, air units and local fishing boats are involved in the rescue operations. Some of the rescued and dead bodies were taken to the administrative center of the province - the city of Isabela.

The cause of the accident is still unknown, the investigation continues. Preliminary indications are that the ferry was not visibly overloaded and passed a safety inspection before leaving on the voyage.

Maritime accidents are common in the Philippines due to the large number of islands and regular stormy conditions, as well as poor enforcement of safety standards on some vessels.
