The extent of the accident was concealed for two days.
In the Murmansk region of Russia, as of January 25, some settlements remained without power supply for the third day. Authorities have declared an emergency situation in the region, writes OOBZ.UA.
A corresponding statement was made by local governor Andrey Chibis. According to him, such measures are connected "with the protracted nature of the accident."
The Russian official explained that during the emergency regime, the authorities will be able to attract additional equipment and materials from private companies.
Why the "blackout"
The Investigative Committee of the Russian Federation reported that on January 23, 2026, between 4 a.m. and 3 p.m. (local time) at a distance of about 7 km from Murmansk in the direction of Severomorsk-3, five intermediate transmission line towers collapsed.
"Two towers had been in operation since 1966, two more since 1982, and one since 1988. The lifespan of the supports is 40 years, after which every 5 years power transmission lines and transmission line supports are subject to technical inspection," the Investigative Committee of the Russian Federation informed.
Rosseti North-West said the structures fell due to snowfall and squally winds. Investigators confirmed that: "No signs of any external impact of third parties on the transmission line supports were found during the visual inspection." A criminal case of negligence has been opened.

A part of Severomorsk, its constituent village of Safonovo, and the village of Roslyakovo (all these settlements are connected with the Northern Fleet of the aggressor country) were left without electricity. Also the light was lost in some areas of Murmansk itself.
Because of the lack of electricity, problems with heating began. In Murmansk there are heating points where you can charge phones, get boiling water and warm up food.

Local media claim that employees of Rosseti did not report for two days that their contractor lacked the equipment to promptly eliminate the accident. The problem was first mentioned at the regular headquarters only on January 25, and it was announced not by Rosseti, but by the contractor. It was only after that that a state of emergency mode was introduced - they started looking for equipment to eliminate a large-scale man-made accident from third-party organizations and the military.
