Zelensky Thanked Belarusian Volunteers Who Fight For The Independence Of Ukraine
Vladimir Zelensky

What Kastus Kalinowski fought for remains relevant for today's Belarus.

It is the destiny of the four nations - Ukrainians, Poles, Lithuanians and Belarusians - to be together, Ukrainian President Vladimir Zelensky said, speaking in Vilnius on January 25 at a ceremony commemorating the participants of the 1863-1864 uprising.

He devoted part of his speech to Belarus, noting, in particular, that the country today "is forced to exist as a Russian governor-general's office."

According to Zelensky, what Kastus Kalinovsky fought for remains relevant for today's Belarus. "Real independence" Belarusians "have yet to gain," the Ukrainian leader added.

In 2020, he emphasized, Belarusians had a chance, but their support then "was insufficient."

Talking about Belarus' dependence on Russia, the Ukrainian head of state said that operators of Russian combat drones "operate against Ukraine including from the Belarusian territory." "Russia is using Belarus as a testing ground for blackmailing Europe and the world with 'Oreshniki'. Belarus' industry works for Russian warfare, and Belarus' trade ties help Putin buy the components needed to make threats against everyone in Europe," Zelensky said.

"The Belarusians' uprising should have won in 2020, and then there would have been no threats from there. Europe and the world should have supported the rebellious people, and then history would have been different - safer," Zelensky said.

Addressing the Belarusians, he emphasized: "You are a European people who will be together with all our nations in a united, free Europe. A peaceful, strong Europe. You cannot be crossed out."

The politician also thanked the Belarusian volunteers who are fighting for Ukraine's independence and "a historic chance for their state."

Lithuanian President Gitanas Nauseda, Polish President Karol Nawrocki, Svetlana Tihanovska and other politicians are taking part in the commemoration of the participants of the 1863-1864 uprising in Vilnius.
